Andheri Bridge Collapse: Western Railway wants Bandra footpath, Vasai bridge to stay closed

In the backdrop of a portion of Gokhale bridge collapsing on Tuesday, the Western Railway on Friday said it has asked authorities to shut the footpath on road over bridge near Kalanagar junction and road over bridge (RoB) in Vasai. Further on fourth consecutive day, traffic continued to crawl in western suburbs due to closure of Gokhale bridge in Andheri for repair works.

WR Spokesperson Ravindra Bhakar said, "We asked PWD to shut the footpath on the ROB near Kalanagar junction and also ROB in Vasai as a precaution. There was a new ROB already constructed in Vasai and the closure of the old ROB has not affected traffic at all."

A PWD official, said, "The ROB near Kalanagar junction is over the railway tracks and it being over Western Express Highway there is not much pedestrian movement there. Due to this closure, no traffic movement is affected. The particular stretch where the footpath is shut is on WEH near the arm that leads to LJ. Road in Mahim."

Five were injured after footpath portion of Gokhale bridge collapsed on Tuesday post which the whole bridge was shut for repairs and also Railways had said of conducting audit of more than 450 bridges in the city.

The Mumbai Traffic Police had also issued a traffic advisory due to the closure of Gokhale bridge on Wednesday. The traffic police appealed to take the route through Balasaheb Thackeray bridge, Mrunal Tai Gore flyover, Milan subway/ flyover, Captain Gore bridge Vile Parle, Andheri subway and Khar subway.

Meanwhile, traffic crawled at Milan subway/ flyover (Santacruz), Balasaheb Thackeray flyover (Jogeshwari), Andheri subway, Khare subway and Vile Parle bridge as motorists opted for diversions on fourth consecutive day.

Kanishkha Thakur said, "It took me 3 hours from Borivali to Prabhadevi at 7.30 am in the morning today. There was heavy traffic jam on WEH." Another commuter, Nirav Shah, said, "Traffic on WEH before airport is due to Gokhale bridge being closed. Due to this, all traffic is diverted and we are suffering due to lapse of some irresponsible officers who do not work."
