Responding to senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh's allegation of nepotism made against chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Amruta Fadnavis, the CM's wife, retaliated on Friday saying that not only was Singh's allegation false, but he had also insulted working women with his 'irresponsible' statements.

The Congress leader had accused Fadnavis of "nepotism" over a state agency's order asking developers to open accounts in Axis Bank, where the CM's wife works. A day later, an angry Fadnavis had even sent a legal notice to Singh, seeking an apology for leveling 'baseless' allegations.

Asserting her status as an independent working woman, Amruta Fadnavis — who is the vice-president of Axis Bank — said, "Mr Singh's statement was unbecoming of a leader of his stature. I'm a working woman. With such statements, he has insulted all the working women who are pursuing their career independently without seeking any advantage from their husbands. Women don't always need the support of their men for growth in their career."

Amruta Fadnavis was speaking to the media on the sidelines of a BJP women's wing event to celebrate 'womenhood'.

She accused charged Singh of shooting over her shoulders to target her husband. "With such allegations, Digvijay Singh is actually targeting the CM. Since he can't find any fault with the CM, he is using my shoulders. I work at a corporate office in Lower Parel. That business (which Singh had pointed towards) was conducted by the Worli branch. I have nothing to do with that business," she said.

Amruta Fadnavis fielded other tricky questions as well. When asked about her personal views on discriminatory practices in temples at Trimbakeshwar and Shani Shingnapur, she said: "I can talk about my views in general — I believe in equal rights to women in all spheres of life. I'm sure the conflict would end soon and the decision would be in the favour of women."
