In a bid to gather evidence in a case in which eight youth were arrested for allegedly gang raping a woman while restraining her husband on Monday night, the Amboli police on Wednesday sent the clothes of the gang rape survivor and the accused for forensic analysis. Primary medical reports of the victim have confirmed forceful penetration.

According to the police, a 60-year-old woman was helping the Powai based couple to find a shanty at Andheri. The elderly woman who lives alone at the Shyam Nagar slums at Veera Desai Road works as a maid and had left her shanty when eight persons allegedly entered her shanty on Monday night and gang raped a 32-year-old woman while holding back her husband.

The police had later arrested eight persons - Nastun Zafar Ali Sheikh, 19, Nagesh Dhangar, 19, Mohammed Sheikh, 27, Rakesh Khaire, 21, Zaheer Khan, 23, Ejaz Sheikh, 23, Pradeep Ghagat, 23 and Imran Sheikh, 23, for their alleged involvement in the gang-rape case.

“We produced Ghagat before the court on Wednesday and he has been remanded to police custody till November 04,” said Balwant Patil, Investigation officer, Amboli police station.

It has also come to light that a non-cognisable complaint had earlier been filed by the elderly woman against a person identified only as Sheikh, a local, who had barged into her tenement on a previous occasion. According to the complaint, he allegedly kicked on the door of the elderly woman due to a petty fight and had trespassed. He also harassed and abused the elderly woman repeatedly, forcing her to approach the police.

Family members of the accused claimed that the arrested persons were at their residences and were innocent. “While accused and their kin were denying involvement of those arrested, we have confirmed their presence,” said Patil.
