Almost all Indians will be out of Yemen: Manohar Parrikar

Almost all the Indians were to be evacuated by Monday evening from the war-torn Yemen where the situation on the ground is only worsening.

Interacting with media persons at Mazagon Dock Limited after undocking first of the six Scorpene submarines – Kalvari – defence minister Manohar Parrikar said, "Though it was a very volatile situation, but not even a single bullet had to be fired by us despite the fact that we were prepared for such a situation."

Since March 31, the Indian authorities have evacuated around 3,000 Indian nationals and a couple of hundred foreign nationals as a part of the mission christened as 'Operation Raahat'.

Parrikar also commended the efforts of each of the individuals involved in the operation who provided comfort to the evacuees in whatever manner possible.

As part of 'Op Raahat' the primary aim was to transfer evacuees to nearest safe land, which was Djibouti. Thereafter, C-17 flights got people to the Indian soil. Here in Mumbai, Central Railway arranged for free rail tickets for their onward journey to their respective destinations.

Indians were evacuated from different areas of Yemen like Aden, Ash Shihr, Al Mukallah, Sana'a, Al Hudeidah, etc. Evacuation of Indians from Yemen has by far been Indian Navy's one of the best operations with no set back or loss.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar while praising MDL on it's improved performance of 22-25% said, "We have asked all the defence Public Sector Undertaking to try to double production in the next three years."
