AI bus driver acquitted in accident case

The Bandra Meropolitan magistrate court has acquitted Sahwaj Mohd. Isaq Khan, a 36-year-old private bus driver of Air India, on the grounds that the police had registered their case on the basis of hearsay evidence. The court, in its order, held that the prosecution had failed to adduce evidence of the eyewitness to establish that the accused was driving the bus which caused the death of Asrar Ahmed.

The court held that the prosecution failed to prove the guilt of the accused beyond a reasonable doubt. The evidence adduced on record is not sufficient to hold that the accused was driving his vehicle in rash and negligent manner and caused the death of Ahmed.

The case dates back to May 16, 2008 when Asrar Ahmed was found lying unconscious on the Vakola Bridge. He was found by a police official on patrolling duty. 

On enquiry, he learnt that a bus allegedly belonging to the Air India company rammed into the victim. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead.
