Around 150 Indian puppies and kittens will be up for adoption at the third annual Adoptathon, to be held next week in Bandra. In its previous two editions, the Adoptathon — organised by animal welfare group World For All — has helped find over 200 strays new homes.

This year, the camp will be held over two days instead one, and will have veterinarians and adoption counsellors on site to guide people in adopting a pet suited to their lifestyle.

Since its inception in 2010, WFA has carried out over 5,000 adoptions. “When we started out, we realised there was no organisation which helped with the adoption of stray pups and kittens, who usually don’t survive on the streets, especially with a dead or missing parent. We were tired of feeling helpless, so we started these adoption campaigns,” says Ruchi Nadkarni, founder, World For All.

Indian dogs are especially evolved to fit India’s climate and conditions. Doctors say they have terrific genetic make-up due to cross breeding over the years, which makes their immune system stronger than most other dogs.

Moreover, adopting these hardy stray dogs instead of foreign breeds would put an end to the inhumane business of illegal breeders, who churn out genetically weak litters for commercial benefit.

“The last year, I adopted two adorable kittens at the Adoptathon. I did not know anything about adoption or having pets, but that was taken care of. I was given a comprehensive set of documents about pet care and put in touch with good vets near my area,” says Anita Shyam, a photographer and marketing professional, who is now a volunteer with the animal welfare body.
