Sidheswar De, or S. De as he prefers to be called, has been a solicitor and advocate with the Bombay High Court for the past five decades. Currently serving as the Senior General Manager (Legal) at Bombay Hospital, De is often invited to prestigious conferences and meetings around the country, to share his valuable inputs; he has been a notary public for 25 years.

In October, we had reported that this enigmatic 79-year-old was the only Indian to be invited to Vietnam's International Conference on Land Tenure Security, in Ho Chi Minh City. De is back from the conference bringing along with him memories and experiences, which he shares with dna.

The conference, organised by the International Union of Notaries (UINL), was superb. It was a great learning experience as it presented a rare opportunity for me to meet various dignitaries from across the world.

Oh, it is a fascinating nation; the way it has rebuilt itself, especially after the political unrest that went on for such a long time. The country has changed positively and with alarming alacrity. Locals are an extremely hardworking and honest lot, which has made Vietnam progressive and safe at the same time. It is a culturally rich nation with hospitable and confident people; and all this makes it a country worth visiting.

All discussions revolved around the land and property systems in different countries—things like registration of the land, title of the land, documentation, notary and other land-related policies in various countries. It was an incredible chance to learn about the systems prevailing in various countries.

It was an exceptional honour to speak in front of an audience that listened to me with such rapt attention. The notes that I shared on the topic of 'land tenure security at the service of sustainable development' were appreciated by all.

We did some sightseeing around the city and experienced their vibrant culture and traditions. Out of all the participants at the conference, ten were given a special reception at the Vietnam Governor's House. I am proud to say that I was one of them and I felt like I received yet another honour.
