A digital Diwali for the tribal

With a view to make the tribal youth computer literate and improve their chances of getting a job, city-based Mitra Foundation donated computers and resolved to impart necessary training for them in Awarpada — a small village near Dahanu situated around 120-km from Mumbai.

Leading Marathi artistes Pankaj Vishnu, Abhijit Kelkar and many families from Mumbai on Saturday joined the foundation's fourth successive Diwali celebrations at Awarpada. The non-profit organisation — formed by young media professionals — also donated a computer and furniture set to another tribal village, Wankas, for daily use.

The foundation will also launch a training programme for the village youth to teach them basic computer knowledge like MS Excel, MS Word and DTP that empowers and provides them with basic skill upgradation to secure a job in the future.

"Our endeavour is aimed at creating computer awareness and improving tribal children's skill sets so that we can take one step ahead towards achieving goals of Digital India Campaign," informed Keshav Upadhye, chairman of Mitra Foundation.

Pankaj Vishnu, who celebrated Diwali with tribal children, was overwhelmed with the experience. "I never witnessed such celebration in my entire life. I feel touched by the sheer joy on the faces of these children."

Another Marathi artiste Abhijit Kelkar, who witnessed the celebrations, said: "It was a life-time experience for me to share joy with tribal children and bringing cheer to their faces."

The villagers presented their traditional "Tarpa" dance for the visitors The foundation is working in the field of water and health-care as its priorities in the tribal hamlets. Apart from celebrating Diwali with tribal brethren, Mitra Foundation regularly organizes medical camps in the area.
