The Vanrai police have arrested seven persons allegedly involved in bike racing on the Western Express Highway (WEH) on Tuesday. Before the arrests, when the cops started chasing, the offenders pelted stones, thereby damaging a combat vehicle. The arrested youths were produced before a local court which sent them to one-day police custody.

The arrested persons are Goregaon residents Shubhankar Gope, Ajay Todkar, Dhanraj Bavisa, Ravi Pathak, Abhishek Bafiya, Prathmesh Jadhav and Imtiyaz Khan.

According to the police, complainant police constable KC Jadhav of Vanrai police station was doing patrolling duty on WEH in the early hours of Tuesday when he received information that a few persons were indulging in bike racing. Jadhav alerted a few other policemen who rushed to the spot.

"We saw a few youths were indulging in racing in Ashok Nagar area, close to highway. We then started chasing those bikers. On seeing us, they abandoned their vehicles and fled from there. Taking advantage of darkness, they pelted stones at us and fled after damaging our vehicle," said an officer from Vanrai police station.

The police seized eleven sports bikes from the spot. Few hours later, seven persons showed up at the police station to get their motorcycles. "After they admitted to having been involved in racing and pelting stones at the police along with their associates, they were placed under arrest. We are on the lookout for five more persons involved in the case. Their identities are known to the police," said the officer.
