The state forest department on Monday took possession of the carcass of a 40-foot long Bryde’s whale which had washed ashore at Colaba pumping station on Saturday.

The carcass was found by locals in two different parts.

This whale species can grow up to 50-foot long. Officials from the forest department will conduct a post-mortem to ascertain the cause of death.

The whale had washed ashore on Saturday night and the locals informed the forest department on Monday.

This species of whale falls under the scheduled protected category as per the Protection of Wildlife Act.

“It was found in two parts and because it is highly decomposed, it is not possible to ascertain the exact cause of death at the moment,” said Makarand Ghodke, assistant conservator of forest.

“The carcass did not have any injury marks and prima facie the mammal died a natural death,” added Ghodke.

Ketki Jog, an ecologist and marine researcher, said, “Mumbai’s shores have witnessed whales being washed ashore especially during monsoons. The cause of death can be ascertained only if the carcass can
be examined.”
