Befriending strangers on Facebook cost a 30-year-old Vikhroli-based woman Rs 3.83 lakh. According to Vikhroli Police, Jennita Rangaswami, a resident of Kannamwar Nagar, was duped by four strangers who befriended her over Facebook, between September and October 2016, and later told her that they were in dire need of money.

"They induced the victim to transfer Rs 3.83 lakh in their bank accounts through cash transfer facility. When the victim later demanded her money back, the quartet refused to do so," said an officer from Vikhroli Police Station.

The suspects have been booked under sections 420 (cheating) and 34 (common intention) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 66 D (impersonating with the use of a computer) of Information Technology Act.

"Though the incident happened in 2016, the complaint got registered recently. The suspects had reportedly used false identity to dupe the victim. We are probing the case further and would take help of cyber-crime police in tracing the suspects," said Sanjay More, senior police inspector, Vikhroli Police Station.
