Police said that the phones were confiscated after it was found that they contained images of excerpts from the text for the exam.
Three class XII students were detained from their exam centres in Kandivli on Friday for allegedly cheating in the HSC Book Keeping examination. Kandivli police detained the students after the board's flying squad caught them students with phones in the examination hall and alerted the police.
Police said that the phones were confiscated after it was found that they contained images of excerpts from the text for the exam. While two students were detained from Balbharti High School centre, the other was detained from TR Naravane Vidyalaya, both of which are in Kandivli west.
"The flying squad from the board visited the school premises. After finding a student behaving suspiciously, they checked him to find the cellphone with the question paper and answers in the mobile phone's gallery," said a Kandivli police officer.
"A few members from our flying squads found these three students carrying mobile phones inside the exam hall, which is not permissible as per our guidelines and they also found photo grabs of study material in the phone gallery of these students. We immediately alerted the Kandivli police," said Dattatray Jagtap, Chairperson, Mumbai Divisional Board.
Officers at the Kandivli police station said that they detained the students from their respective centres after a tip off from the board's flying squad. "We have detained the three teens. Authorities of the education board have submitted a formal complaint against the trio; further investigation is being conducted", said Mukund Pawar, Senior Inspector, Kandivli police station.
"The case has been filed against six persons including three persons who provided the question papers to the students. We are yet to identify the other three persons. Further action will be initiated against the students after the exams," said Pawar.
Jagtap said that after the paper leak incident, the board has decided to take strict action against students as well as invigilators who are caught possessing cell phones inside the exam hall. "We are going to lodge an official police complaint whenever we find people carrying phones inside the exam hall," he said.
