A 22-year-old daughter of a Mumbai police officer was allegedly gang-raped and murdered by three persons, one of them 'a friend', in Ambernath on Monday. After the crime, the accused stuffed the woman's body in a suitcase, dumped it in Belgaum and drove to Ratnagiri where they confessed to the crime.
The woman, an IT engineer, worked in Vikhroli. Her father is an assistant sub-inspector with the Nagpur police.
The accused have been identified as Nagpur residents Nikhlesh Patil (24) and Nilesh Khobragade (38) and Akshay Valode, 25, from Ambernath. While Nilesh is a government contractor, Valode works with an internet service provider company at Koparkhairane.
According to police, the woman was visiting a relative in Pune during the weekend and she informed Patil about the same. "Patil and Khobragade drove to Pune in the latter's car and met her on September 4."
She asked them to drop her at Vikhroli. However, they drove to Valode's Ambernath residence where he and Patil raped and strangulated her to death," said a police officer.
He added that the accused then stuffed her body in a suitcase and drove towards Karnataka.
"They dumped her body near a highway at Pashti in Belgaum. It seems they panicked later. On Tuesday, while returning, they surrendered at City Police Station in Ratnagiri and narrated the entire incident following which the police recovered the body. Their motive is still unclear," added the officer.
"The trio have been booked under section 376 G (gang-rape) and 302 (murder). We have forwarded all the documents and panchnama report to Shivaji Nagar Police in Thane for further probe," said Pranaya Ashok, Superintendent of Police, Ratnagiri.
