The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) has goofed up the Common Entrance Test (CET) question paper for post- graduate students in Maharashtra. The exam, held on January 4, was for MD and MS admissions.
Around 9,815 students appeared for 792 seats in Maharashtra.

What will the DMER do now?
It will have to gift 43 marks – 26 to all students who appeared for the exam and an additional 17 to those who attempted questions with two possible right answers. The DMER has also decided to blacklist those who set the question papers for a stipulated period. Speaking to dna, DMER officials said that, in future, they will take more precaution.

How did it come to light?
DMER had told students they can file online complaints on its website, if they found anything wrong in the question paper. After the examination, there were 12,535 objections on 256 questions on the website.

Did DMER get any complaint?
After the exam, some students approached the Bombay high court after they realised that because of the DMER faux pas, their merit list numbers will go down and they would not be able to pursue the subjects of their choice. The next hearing in the high court is on March 27.

How many wrong questions were there?
On January 19, DMER decided to get the question paper checked by a third-party agency. According to the provisional results declared on January 28, 26 questions were wrong and 17 had more than one right answer.

What is DMER saying?
"We agree that there are mistakes... Now onwards, we will take extra precaution. Some mistakes will happen as medical science is progressive. For example, a specific treatment line for a specific disease can change over the years and the dosage and measurement of medicines can also change," said Dr Mansingh Pawar, competent authority of CET, DMER.

What are experts saying?
According to Dr Arun Bal, health activist and senior surgeon,"Have we heard about mistakes in IIT common entrance exams? Why is it happening only with DMER's CET? They are not taking their job seriously. There are several incidents when students have lost their seats for just one mark."
