24-year-old held for sexual relations with minor on promise of marriage

The Bandra police have arrested a 24-year-old man on a charge of rape for allegedly have sexual relations with a 17-year-old girl after promising to marry her.

The police identified the man as Lekraj Gupta alias Sarju, who is a driver and lives in Bandra (West).

They said the girl lives in the same locality and that they met often in the past couple of years.

Gupta promised to marry the girl and had physical relations with her.

"The girl had left her home on May 18, and when she did not return her parents lodged a complaint with the Bandra police," said Ramchandra Dhawale, senior inspector, Bandra police station.

"The girl returned home on Saturday. When her parents asked her where she had gone, she initially avoided saying anything but subsequently told them that she had gone away with Gupta. She told them about their relationship," the officer said.

The parents informed the police about what had happened. Since the girl is a minor the police registered a case of rape on the statement of the parents and arrested Gupta.
