The city police have traced as many as 2,097 missing persons including 546 minors since November last year. To get to the root of this racket, they are also trying to track down gangs that organise kidnappings and then push the victim into begging or child labour.

"I had told all police stations to look into missing persons cases that have been unsolved since 2005. We have been successful in tracing 2,097 missing persons, including 546 minors from November till Sunday. A majority of them were found in the city itself, while some had migrated to other parts of the country. The number of missing persons reported is in thousands," said police commissioner Rakesh Maria.

The police are also examining what happens to people who go missing, said Maria. "We are investigating whether minors were put in any begging or child labour activities. We have appointed one more detection officer, which brings the count to two, in each police station across Mumbai. The promotions of these officers will depend upon their performance. Once they get promoted, they will become the main detection officers of the police station," said the top cop.

The police department also plans to ensure that the hard work done by the force get sufficient recognition by giving officers rewards for doing meticulous work in the tasks assigned to them. "We have plans for various rewards such as best detection, best conviction rate, officers who have traced the maximum missing persons, those who have busted drug rackets and caught criminals with firearms," Maria added.
