The BMC is planning to upload the personal information of all citizens gathered during 'Socio-Economic and Caste Census' in 2011 in the public domain. However, considering the legal tangles it would have to face in the future if the information is uploaded without citizens' consent, the civic administration has asked people to apply and inform the civic body if they do not wish to share their personal data with the public.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation started the Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC) in 2011 which comprises all personal information on the household appliances, vehicles, income of each employed family member, caste and religion. This information was compiled and will be now uploaded in the public domain.

"Presently, the work on the draft list is going on and the list will be shortly uploaded. Now, the BMC is trying to inform citizens through public notice that all data (except data on caste) would be put in the public domain unless they submit a written request in the format given below that they do not wish to share their data in public," said a senior officer.

The BMC issued a public notice on Wednesday. "If they do not submit a written request in the format given within 15 days to the designated charge officer (assistance commissioner) for the SECC 2011 from the publication of the notice that they do not wish to share their socio-economic data in public at the time of publication of the draft list, it would be presumed that they have no objection to sharing their data with the public," said the official.
