The notorious fatka gangs operating across the city's suburban railway tracks, were involved in over 200 cases of theft last year. This was stated in a written reply by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to Bhimrao Dhonde's (BJP- Ashti) question in the State Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

Fadnavis said 146 offences had been registered in the Mumbai Railway Police Commissionerate from central zone in 2017 against those who climb poles or stand on the tracks and hit passengers on their hands using sticks and poles (making them drop their valuables and phones). The number of cases registered in the western zone was 56, taking the total number of such offences to 202.

Of the 146 cases registered in the central zone, 64 accused have been arrested in 33 offences and charge-sheets have been filed against them. A total of 82 cases are being investigated. In the 56 cases registered in the western zone, charge-sheets have been filed in three cases and final summaries have been lodged in 35 cases with 18 cases under investigation.

Two squads have been appointed on all railway stations for day and night patrols and they also visit spots where such offences are reported repeatedly. The railway police has also started a special 1512 helpline for commuters to lodge their complaints.

The fatka gang members climb pole along tracks and hit passengers on their hands making them drop their phones and bags. Last month, a 23-year old student Dravita Singh was hit on her head with a stick between Sandhurst Road and Masjid Stations. She lost the fingers on her left hand and the right foot after they were crushed by an oncoming train.
