Captivity and loneliness in jail, it seems, can soften even the most hardened criminals, making them yearn for their loved ones. A case in point is Satish Kalia, the prime accused in senior journalist J Dey murder case.

Three constables attached with the Local Arms (LA) division of the Mumbai police have found themselves in the soup for alleged dereliction of duty, when they allowed Kalia to meet his wife near Mahalaxmi Racecourse in April while escorting him back to Arthur Road jail from the MCOCA court.

The police have launched an inquiry against the trio and already suspended two constables involved.

On April 9, Kalia, who is currently in Arthur Road jail, was to be taken to the MCOCA court, which is inside the jail itself. As per the protocol, Kalia was to be escorted from the prison till the main gate of the jail and then be handed over to the LA constables, who would be on escort duty.

"We are not allowed to escort the accused from his cell. Jail authorities get the accused to us and then we take him to court," said a source attached with LA. "Kalia was to be handed over to the escort party at the gate, who would put him in a vehicle and take him to the court inside the jail from the back gate. After the hearing, the escort party were to take him back to the main gate."

Two constables, identified as Shyamnath Solanki and Harinath Mane, along with one unidentified constable, after the hearing on April 9 ended around 4.45pm, allegedly took Kalia in the police vehicle to the racecourse to meet his wife instead of taking him back to the main gate. Later, they dropped him at the gate and handed him over to the jail authorities.

Additional commissioner of police (LA) Quaiser Khalid confirmed the incident and said, "When the matter came to light, we immediately ordered an inquiry into it. Solanki and Mane have been placed under suspension. We are also probing the third constable's role as we have come to know that he was not on duty that day. Hence, we are checking what was he doing near the jail."

Recently, Khalid had initiated an inquiry after it came to light that underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's aide Mustafa Dossa had allegedly conducted a "mini-audition" of a few models for an advertisement for a company in Dubai. The inquiry has been launched to check what the escort party of policemen was doing when Dossa was carrying out the alleged audition.
