18 new gardens in city by 2018

After making a provision of Rs 2,060 in the financial budget of 2016-17 for implementation of the DP, the civic officials have decided to develop 41 plots reserved for garden and playgrounds, of which work on 18 plots is expected to start from November.

Mumbaikars can expect to get 18 open spaces developed into gardens and playgrounds by May 2018, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to develop open spaces reserved under the Development Plan (DP) 1991-2011, a blue print for the city's development till 2011, which were carried forward in the Revised Draft Development Plan (RDDP) 2014-2034 of Mumbai.

After making a provision of Rs 2,060 in the financial budget of 2016-17 for implementation of the DP, the civic officials have decided to develop 41 plots reserved for garden and playgrounds, of which work on 18 plots is expected to start from November.

In the implementation of the DP 1991-2011, the BMC succeeded in developing only around 10 per cent of open spaces in the city. All the reserved open spaces are carried forward in RDDP 2014-2034. The 41 plots BMC the will develop, all are encroachment-free and in the BMC's possession.

Out of 41 reserved plots, 25 are for garden and 16 for development of playground. The total expenditure for development of these plots will be Rs 30 crore. Of the 41, maximum plots are in L-ward (Kurla), N-ward (Ghatkopar) and R-Central ward (Borivali). The biggest garden plot is in Oshiwara with 5.28 lakh sq feet and the biggest plot for playground is in Malad with 1.05 lakh sq feet area.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner Kishor Kshirsagar said, "The tenders for 18 plots is in final stage and the work is expected to start by November. We also expect that the 18 plots will get developed by May 2018."
