13 arrested for beating Nagpur trader to death

The Palghar police have arrested 13 people, including four minors, for murdering a 21-year-old trader from Nagpur on Sunday.

The deceased, Daljit Singh, who was to have got married next month, was beaten to death when he got into a brawl with the group after they teased him. 

Daljit Singh and his friend Zorawar Singh, 21, both Nagpur residents, arrived in Palghar on Sunday for a business meeting. They were residing in a hotel where the 13-member group arrived in a jeep after Navratri celebrations.

“The group started calling him names, and an inebriated Daljit got angry and started arguing with them. The group then punched and kicked Daljit, leading to his death. Panicked, they dumped his body in a nullah,” said an officer of Palghar police station.

“The jeep was tracked down to the Satpati village. We used the footage from CCTV cameras to trace its owner, who confessed  lending the car to the boys,” said Valmik Patil, assistant inspector, Palghar police station.

The 13 arrested have been charged under sections 302 (murder) and 141 (unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code and certain sections of the Mumbai Police Act, said Patil.
