A 28-year-old man died and 13 others, who were en route to a wedding reception, were injured on Saturday after a private bus they were traveling in hit a road divider and turned turtle at the Gandhi Nagar junction in Vikhroli (West). The Parksite police have registered a case against the private bus driver, who is absconding, for rash driving and causing death due to negligence,

The deceased has been identified as Imtiaz Shaikh, who was the manager of the bus as well as part of the group travelling to Mumbra.

According to the police, the incident took place at around 1 pm on Saturday when the bus was plying from Malad to Mumbra with 35 people on board. The bus, registered under Destiny Travels — a Mumbai-based travel agency — was hired by the group to take them from Malad to a wedding reception in Mumbra. The driver lost control of the bus while taking a sharp turn at the junction to enter LBS Marg when it hit the divider.

"Around 1 pm on Saturday, I was standing on the road near Gandhi Junction when I saw a speeding bus hit the divider and turn over. I, along with two of my friends, helped the injured get out of the bus that turned turtle," said Pratik Wankhede, an eyewitness.

The injured were removed from the bus after breaking the windshield at the front, following which, the bus was lifted with the help of a crane. The rescue operation lasted over three hours, and those injured have been shifted to different hospitals in Kanjurmarg, Vikhroli and Powai.

A team of police officers from different police stations (is this correct) in Powai, Vikhroli and Sakinaka was called for the rescue operation along with the fire brigade.

Traffic on the LBS Marg heading towards Mulund was hit for over three hours after the incident.

"All on board were heading to a wedding reception in Mumbra. All the injured were taken to a hospital and were discharged after treatment. The driver, Sanoj, is absconding. Our probe is on to track him down," said Vilas Jadhav, Senior Police Inspector of Parksite Police Station.

Cases under Sections 279 (Rash Driving), 337 (Endangering other life) and 304A (Causing death by negligence) of Indian Penal Code have been registered against the driver at the Parksite Police Station.
