Mukesh Ambani’s telecom venture, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (RJIL), which has hit the 100-million-user mark during its six-month promotional free offer period, has not only disrupted the domestic telecom market but has also catapulted India on the global digital map to the top in terms of mobile data usage.

Ambani said on Tuesday, "Before Jio, India was 150th in the world in broadband penetration. But, last month, just five months after Jio’s launch (on September 5, 2016), Jio users consumed more than 100 crore GB (gigabyte) on the Jio network. That is more than 3.3 crore GB per a day. Today, India is number one country in the world for mobile data usage,” he said.

He further claimed that a large part of data on Jio’s network was consumed as videos with 5.5 crore hours of video being carried daily on it.

Rel Jio has been able to achieve such feats by offering free voice and data services on its fourth generation-long term evolution (4G-LTE) network for the past six months that has seen its bigger rivals Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular and others struggling to fend off competition by slashing data tariff.

Ambani, who is known to be ruthlessly aggressive when it comes to wiping out competition, is now gearing up for market rivalry through paid data services with Rel Jio’s promotional offer closing at the end of next month.

While he talked about a host of goodies for loyal or early on-boarders, he said Jio’s data plans would be discounted by around 20% after the company’s services were commercially launched on April 1.

“We will not only match the highest selling tariffs of each of the other leading Indian telecom operators but we will provide 20% more data in each of these plans,” said India’s richest man.

For those who would buy Jio sim on and before March 31 and enrol for one-year Jio prime membership on payment of Rs 99, Reliance has designed a “custom-made programme” that included introductory tariff of Rs 303 per month, one-year free media services and other such add-ons.

Ambani emphasised that all data plans would be bundled with free voice calls on any network, no roaming charges, no blackout days or hidden charges.
