With a view to broaden its portfolio and capture a larger portion of the revenue pie, Tata motors has launched an indigneous turbocharged petrol engine called 'Revotron' today. This will be the major component of Tata's future vehicular models.
As per reports in Hindu, the turbocharged multi-point fuel injected engine will be used in the near future in Tata falcon cars (A hatchback sedan).
A turbocharger's advantage is that it makes an engine more efficient and produces more power for its size by forcing extra air into the combustion chamber.
The new turbo petrol engine is meant to focus on fuel efficiency rather than extreme performance. The 4 cylinder engine will have a 2 valve/cylinder head, a rarity in today’s world of DOHC-4 valve/cylinder engines.
A new gearbox is being developed by the company that will be syncronised for better compatibilty with Revotron 1.2T engine as the reports suggests.
The Revotron 1.2 T has been tested for global standards by a Korean firm.
The new 1.2-litre turbocharged Revotron engine’s turbocharger features advanced technology like a water cooling system working in tandem with the intercooler. The new turbo also features a low inertia turbo blades and bearings which let the turbo spool quicker thus making power delivery across the rev-range possible.
According to Dr Tim Leverton, a lot of joint development, both in terms of technologies, processed and strategies have been shared between the Tata team in India and the JLR team in the United Kingdom to jointly develop this family of turbocharged engines.
According to Hormazd Sorabjee, editor, Autocar India magazine, the new petrol turbocharged engine is a leap for Tata Motors and in line with the global trend. “Such engines offer better power fuel efficiency without compromising the power,” he said as quoted by Mint.
With this new technology that is the future of next-gen sedans and four-wheelers, Tata sure has made a smart move. Competition surely has been razed up in the automobile sector and this will reflect in the stock markets too.
