Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has announced two elevated suburban railway corridors for Mumbai.

Mumbai is slated to get an elevated railway corridor from Churchgate-Virar and one CST-Panvel railway corridor.

He said that Mumbai has an overstressed suburban system. "We are working towards achieving financial closure of two elevated corridors between Churchgate and Virar and CST and Panvel," he said.

Apart from measures announced for reducing the overstressed suburban railways, Prabhu appealed to the state governments to stagger office timings to reduce stress on the system.

"I appeal to all the state governments to stagger office timings to reduce rush hours and stress on the transport system." he added.

However, apart from this, Prabhu failed to announce any measures for Mumbai which is heavily dependent on its local train network. On Wednesday, a group of transport activists highlighted the issue of alarming rise in the number of passenger deaths, mostly due to the crossing of tracks and falling off crowded trains, and demanded a separate zone for local services in Mumbai to address the woes of commuters.

They were looking for increased safety measures, standard practices for accidents, creating new suburban railway hubs and terminus to ensure better dispersal of commuter traffic, which were all left out in the Budget statement.
