Out of the total stolen properties, only Rs 1,350 crore worth of properties could be recovered.
Astonishing it may sound but taking into account all the big and small thefts, properties worth over Rs 8,210 crore were stolen in the country during 2015 of which only Rs 1,350 crore could be recovered.
The national capital reported highest theft of Rs 719 crore but Delhi Police could recover only Rs 125 crore which is meagre 17.5%, the data shows.
About half of the total properties stolen in 2015 were reported from Maharashtra alone where over Rs 4,533 crore went to thieves and only 5% of it could be recovered by the police.
Across the country, thefts showed an increase of 9.3% in terms of worth of property stolen in comparison to 2014 when property of over Rs 7,500 crore was stolen.
The alertness of Tamil Nadu Police saw 65.4% of total 131 crore stolen properties recovered by it which is the highest recovery rate in the country followed by 56.2% reported by Punjab and 52% in Rajasthan.
These details are part of 63rd edition of NCRB data reported in 'Crime in India 2015' released by Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
The National Crime Records Bureau publishes the report on annual basis, since the first edition published for the year 1953, an official statement said.
It said the report contains information on police recorded criminal cases pertaining to the calendar year 2015 in which data has been collected from 36 States/UTs and 53 Mega Cities having population of more than 10 lakh.
The report shows an increase of 5.3% under crimes against children (from 89,423 in 2014 to 94,172 cases in 2015) in which Kidnapping and abduction constituted 44.5% of total cases of crimes against children in 2015.
"An increase of 25.8% under crimes against Human Trafficking (6,877 cases in 2015 compared to 5,466 cases in 2014)," the report says.
The report also says there is a decrease of 4.7% under crimes against Scheduled Tribes which has gone down from 11,451 in 2014 to 10,914 cases in 2015.
Besides a decrease of 4.4% has also been reported under crimes against Scheduled castes from 47,064 in 2014 to 45,003 cases in 2015.
The crime against women have also reported a meagre decrease of 3.1% i.e from 3.37 lakh cases in 2014 to 3.27 lakh cases in 2015.
The report says over 28.69 lakh cases were investigated during the year.
It says chargesheet rate was 98.1% and conviction rate was 92.4% under Special and Local Laws (SLL) cases.
"A total of 73,26,099 offence cases [29.49 lakh Indian Penal Code (IPC) cases and 43.76 lakh SLL cases] were reported in 2015, an increase of 1.3% over 2014," it said.
