Over 2000 new SBI accounts opened after demonetization under CBI scanner

Over 2,000 new bank accounts that were created at the State Bank of India (SBI's) Bareilly branch after demonetization, have come under the scanner of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), a report by The Times of India said. 

According to the report, after demonetization, about Rs 8 crore was deposited in these accounts in the form of old notes till December 31, the deadline to deposit the decommissioned Rs 500 and Rs 100 notes. 

The CBI got an FIR registered against unknown bank officials and unknown persons for criminal conspiracy, cheating, and corruption, the report said. 

Cash was deposited in both, newly created accounts and dormant accounts which were activated after demonetization.

According to the report, the CBI found 2,441 new accounts, out of which 667 were savings accounts, 53 were current accounts, 94 were Jan Dhan accounts, two were senior citizen accounts and one was a government account.

In over 794 instances, cash of over Rs 1 lakh was deposited in a single transaction.
