Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman Arun Kumar Jain on Monday asked his officials on field to offer the best service to taxpayers whom he described as "partners in nation-building".

Speaking at the induction ceremony of 69th batch of fresh probationers of Indian Revenue Service (IRS) at the National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT) here, Jain said there were 76,000 officers working in the department.

"The taxpayers in the era of globalisation and privatisation are the partners in the nation-building programme and therefore, they should be extended an excellent service by the Income Tax Department," he said.

"It (the department) has successfully implemented the e-filing and e-governing programme for the assistance of the tax payers."

A total of 167 officers, including 26 women, were inducted into the training programme, who will later join the department as assistant commissioner of income tax, said NADT Director General, Gunjan Mishra.

A majority of them are from Uttar Pradesh followed by Rajasthan and Maharashtra. As many as 62 of them are engineering graduates and 14 are social science degree holders.

They will undergo a training for 16 months, she added.
