Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu announced 13 new cities that made the cut to be developed as a smart city.

Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu has announced a list of 13 cities as the winners of the Fast Track Smart City competition, in a press conference on Tuesday.
Lucknow topped the list of cities that would qualify for the next round to be developed as a smart city. 13 cities were picked by Naidu out of 23 that were competing. These were 23 cities with the highest ranking from as many states and union territories were the ones that failed to get representation in the first round of the Fast Track competition held in January.
While Lucknow topped the list, it was followed by Warangal, Dharamshala, Chandigarh, Raipur.

Assured water and power supply, sanitation and solid waste management systems, efficient urban mobility and public transportation, IT connectivity, e-governance and citizen participation are some of the highlights of the smart city project.
Under the Smart City Mission, 100 cities across the country will be developed as smart cities by 2019-20 with the Union government providing financial support to the extent of Rs 48,000 crore over five years.
In the first round announced in January, 13 cities out of the total 20 mission cities were from Odisha, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab, whereas two cities were from Karnataka.
