The ASSOCHAM on Tuesday made a strong plea to the government to include top leaders of the country's apex chambers as part of the 'official delegations' in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's overseas tours as the economic and business agenda invariably occupies the centre stage in the international deliberations.

The ASSOCHAM also wished a grand success to Prime Minister Modi for his visits to Myanmar, Australia and Fiji for the crucial multilateral and bilateral engagements including G-20 Summit and India-ASEAN Summit,

"Business chambers such as ASSOCHAM with rich history, goodwill and a reach out to lakhs of businesses and trade can provide very useful inputs for the multilateral or bilateral talks , well representing a cross section of the stakeholders," ASSOCHAM secretary general D.S. Rawat said.

Rawat said the inclusion of industry bodies in the Prime Minister's entourage as part of the official delegations would bring in a lot of respect and status to India Inc, which is now contributing significantly to the economic growth. "Initiatives like Make – in –India would certainly need a strong endorsement from the Indian industry in the presence of global business leaders," he said.

The contributions of the private sector in the total economy is only increasing by the day in terms of investment, employment generation, tax revenues and even public projects in the infrastructure space. Also in forum like G-20, and India-ASEAN Summits and East Asia Summit, vital inputs can be obtained from the chambers like ASSOCHAM which keeps connecting to the enterprises actively engaged in the global trade.

"India does a merchandise exports of about USD 325 billion and over 45 per cent of it comes from a large number of micro, small and medium enterprises. Whenever India gets into global engagement at the PM's level, these entrepreneurs have a lot of expectations in terms of flagging their issues vis-à-vis specific countries," said Rawat.

"For instance, there is a huge problem of visas, banking channels, taxation, social security and non-tariff barriers faced by a large segments of the industry. Our presence as official delegates in the PM's entourage will go a long way in addressing such issues," he added.

The ASSOCHAM secretary general further said the inclusion of the business chambers in the Prime Minister's visit should be only as official delegates and they should not be included as participants on the sidelines of the central agenda. "The Prime Minister Mr Modi has acquired a reputation of trying out new things. We are sure in the days to come, the composition of the teams accompanying him for official talks abroad will undergo a qualitative change," Rawat said.
