In the last 23 months of the NDA government, the defence ministry has placed orders worth around Rs 2.20 lakh crore with the private sector for procurement of military equipment and this is going to increase in the next one quarter, said defence minister Manhohar Parrikar.

However, a majority of these deals have been done under the 'Make in India' initiative.

Parrikar said that since the government has come to power, around Rs 2.20 lakh crore defence contracts have already been signed with the private companies and most of the deals have been struck under the "Make in India" scheme. He added that orders worth around Rs 50-60,000 crore are likely to be given soon.

"We are expecting that the defence deals to private companies to touch around Rs 3 lakh crore and even a Letter of Intent has been issued to a company for defence order," said Parrikar. He added that these order projects are from the earlier government which were not concluded.

The orders include self-propelled artillery guns, light howitzers, submarines and helicopters, as well as arms and ammunition. Dhanush, the artillery gun, and towed howitzers with a strike range of 38-kilometre, developed by Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), Kolkata will be handed over to Indian Army. Dhanush artillery gun is also called 'desi bofors'.

Parrikar said that there is a technical issue in giving the orders to local players as they face tough competition from the global players. Global players offer the same product at low cost. "We have a system that we cannot buy products at a higher price if the same is available at low cost. Planning is going on to change it to provide encourage local players," said Parrikar. He added that they have already stopped importing various material and buying from Indian companies. The government has already formed a committee of Strategic Material Policy for procurement of material.

Parrikar was attending a exhibition in navi Mumbai where around 300 participants from all over the world have congregated on a single platform.
