On the second day of Apple Inc CEO Tim Cook’s India visit on Thursday, the company announced the opening of a new office in Hyderabad that will focus on development of maps for Apple products, including iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch.

The centre in the south is expected to create up to 4,000 jobs. The US-based mobile device company currently employs around 1 lakh people.

“Apple is focused on making the best products and services in the world and we are thrilled to open this new office in Hyderabad which will focus on Maps development,” said Cook in a statement issued by the company.

The company has been continually updating and adding new features to maps, including 3D views, the flyover feature and tools to help customers find convenient places to shop, eat and explore nearby areas.

Apple supports over 6.40 lakh iOS app developer jobs and other positions related to the iOS ecosystem across India.

Cook on his second day said it was "exactly the right time" to be in the country and the US firm presence will be for "hundreds" of years.

"Journey starts with the first step. We are not here for a year or few years, we are here for a long time, 100s of years. And we are a long term company. The thing that we make the most focus is iPhone. Its a key part," Cook told NDTV.

He added that in order to bring out the "richness" of the iPhone, 4G network is very important.

"4G network is beginning to come in now. I think it's exactly the right time to be here," Cook said.

Apparently, the chief of India’s most valuable company dashed off to Kanpur in the evening to watch the India Premier League (IPL) match between Gujarat Lions and Kolkata Knight Riders on invitation of League chairman Rajeev Shukla.

“I had personally invited Cook to watch an IPL match and I am glad that he has accepted my invitation,” Shukla told a news agency.

Cook, who is on a four-day visit to India is expected to meet a host of political leaders, industrialists and top celebrities.

The Apple boss is also likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra, though it is not yet confirmed. He said already leading banker Chanda Kochhar and Vodafone India chief Sunil Sood. He is also reportedly expected to meet Bharti Airtel Sunil Bharti Mittal on Friday.
