Coal India on Friday sacked its human resource director R Mohan Das following a directive from the coal ministry.

The sudden development comes just about two months ahead of Mohan Das' scheduled retirement, bringing back memories of a time when the Kolkata-headquartered, second largest recruiter in the country used to enjoy full monopoly over an energy source precious enough to be called black diamond and when the entity was fully owned by the government, with little corporate governance standards to show.

"R Mohan Das, director, (P&IR) Coal India services has been terminated with effect from March 30 as per direction received from Ministry of Coal and hence he ceased to be the director of the company," Coal India said in a notice to the Bombay Stock exchange on Friday.

While the company did not specify the reasons for his termination, there were allegations of corruption including possible exchange of money against promotions and appointments, sources told DNA Money.

"I tried to bring in many changes in the way human resource functions in a public sector entity like Coal India, which might have angered many people. I accept the decision and am not going to protest it as I am a satisfied man after bringing in so many changes," Mohan Das told DNA Money

With experience of working in relatively smaller PSUs like Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd and Madras Fertilizers Ltd, Mohan Das became a controversial HR manager in Coal India where he introduced a new career improvement policy. His Performance Management System developed by Manpower, a leading HR firm, replaced the coal behemoth's existing appraisal system.

In fact, last month Mohan Das was selected as the 'HR Trendsetter of the Year' by Fore-Top Rankers Award for Excellence, in recognition of his setting benchmarks in recruitment, training and performance management system in Coal India.

"The award was given after rigorous considerations of the nominees of the year," Coal India had said after the award was presented on February 3.
