BSE Sensex rises for 3rd straight week; zooms by 406 points

The S&P BSE Sensex and the NSE 50-issue CNX Nifty both ended the week at record closing high. The market gained in four out of five trading sessions.

The S&P BSE Sensex and the NSE 50-issue CNX Nifty both ended the week at record closing high. The market gained in four out of five trading sessions. 

The BSE index on Friday climbed 1.9 percent, or 405.92 points, after earlier setting a record high at 21,960.89 points. It zoomed 3.79 percent or 799.67 points for the week. 

The broader NSE Nifty also hit all-time high of 6,537.80 points in intra-day trade, surpassed its previous high of 6,415.25 hit on Dec. 9 before closing at 6,526.65. During the week, the 50-unit CNX Nifty gained 249.70 points or 3.98 percent.

The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index moved higher by 193.02 points or 2.97 percent to 6,693.44 and the S&P BSE Small-Cap index rose 167.41 points or 2.6 percent to 6,612.45. Both these indices underperformed the Sensex. 

For the year, foreign investors have bought a net USD 850 million in shares, after buying USD 20 billion worth last year.
