Gary Kenneth Toomey, an aviation industry veteran, will take charge as the chief executive officer of Jet Airways,  almost two months after Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways picked up a stake in India’s second largest carrier.

The 58-year-old Australian national has an extensive experience of the international, domestic and regional aviation sector. He has previously served as president and CEO of the Air New Zealand Group and as CEO of Airlines PNG in Papua New Guinea during  their periods of major expansion.

He has also worked with Qantas Airways and Australian Airlines.

Since 2001, he also managed a private consulting business for 12 years, providing support to senior management of businesses in the aviation, hospitality, construction and resources industries throughout the Asia Pacific region.

His appointment follows the exit of Nikos Kardassis, who served two terms at Jet as CEO, initially between 1993 and 1999, and  from October 2009 till May 2013.

“Toomey’s appointment is subject to necessary regulatory approvals including security clearance as may be required,”  the airline said in a statement on Thursday.

Etihad Airways acquired 24% stake in Jet, post which the two airlines are in the phase of drawing new strategies in order to increase their presence in domestic as well as international markets.

Naresh Goyal, chairman of  Jet Airways, said, “We need a dynamic executive with deep knowledge of and experience in the airline industry to lead the next phase of our development. Toomey has extensive experience in domestic and international airline management, and the right credentials and skills to take Jet Airways forward.”

“The Indian aviation market was one of the fastest-growing in the world, offering significant potential for Jet not only within India, but beyond, through new or improved international connections,” Toomey said in a statement.
