A study of dogs has found that man's best friend sees the world from his point of view.

They work out what we can and cannot see and take advantage of it, says Juliane Kaminski, a psychologist at Portsmouth University, Hampshire.

She found dogs are four times as likely to disobey orders to leave food in the dark than the light, Daily Express reported Tuesday.

"That’s incredible. It implies they might understand the human perspective," said Kaminski in the journal Animal Cognition.

She tested the dogs by putting them in a room one at a time and telling them not to take the food. When it was dark, they were four times as likely to grab the forbidden food.

Animal psychologist Roger Mugford said: "Dogs know the difference between right and wrong. If they think they can get away with something, they will try."
