Did you know that, according to research, any communication in this world is over 80 per cent visual? Suman Agarwal, Director of Image Consulting Business Institute, will tell you why. “People form first impression about you within a few seconds of meeting you and this happens only on the basis of what they can see. Which is mostly clothes. So one needs to dress as per role, goals, occasion and personal characteristics like body shape, personal colours etc. Clothes have a huge communication of their own and if one is not careful one will create a wrong message,” explains Suman, adding that the institute’s end objective is to improve the quality of life.

She points out that technically there are eight body shapes and 88 variations within them. And one needs to dress based on their body variation. “This is called countering and repeating techniques. You need to counter a negative variation and repeat or enhance a positive one. For example, if you are a triangular body shape, meaning lower body is much wider than your upper body then you need to balance the upper body with the lower body with the help of clothing. Only expert image consultants can advice on this,” says Suman.

As she puts it, “Image Management is the combined expertise in all elements of image like clothing, grooming, fashion, glamour, soft skills, body language and etiquette. We offer courses like Image Consulting Partner Program where one can become an Image Consultant and career programs called Diploma and Advance Diploma in Image Management.”

Interestingly, Suman insists that image makeover doesn’t really mean getting an expensive wardrobe. Getting into the technical details, Suman clarifies, “In fact, the four A’s of image are defined as Appropriate, Authentic, Attractive and Affordable. Once a client’s clothing need is identified, an image consultant offers shopping services to help them buy. They are taught to buy using the concept of ‘cluster’, which means buying clothes in such a way as to ensure maximum variety and flexibility across various lifestyle needs.”
