The staging of the Gujarati play Kunvaro Lakhno Parnelo Sava Lakhno has marked a comeback for television actor Delnaz Paul to Gujarati theatre after 11 years. Written by playwright Jitendra Parmar, the play was staged on Sunday, June 27, in Mumbai for the first time. It has already been well received by the audience in Ahmedabad.
The play revolves around three guys, one is deaf, the other is dumb and the third is blind. All of them fall in love with a millionaire chick. Delnaz (Paul) plays the lead in the play as a friend of this millionaire chick. The character of Delnaz is that of an overweight, geeky Gujarati girl who oils her hair and wears loose-fitting garbs.
She is a small-town girl from Porbunder, who is rustic, loud and vibrant but at the same time has a simple innocence to her. This character of hers is quite willing to marry any of these three guys. Hence a love triangle develops, only to add humour though.
“I was made to wear loose ill-fitting garbs just to accentuate my weight in order to suit the character,” says Delnaz. “Comedy has always been my forte and this play is a super comedy. In fact it has all the ingredients which pulled me back into Gujarati theatre,” says Delnaz. She has previously been involved with Parsi theatre and has worked closely with director Paritosh Painter and theatre producer Nirav Parekh in Hindi stage comedies.
Director Umesh Shukla of Kunvaro Lakhno Parnelo Sava Lakhno calls this play a two hour long laughter ride. “The play has been staged close to 45 times in Ahmedabad and it has been houseful each time and that is what raised my expectations in Mumbai as well,” says Umesh. “There are four choreographed songs and some melodious music that makes the play appear more like a live screen movie,” he laughs.
