Fashion designers give men's events a skip.

‘Fashion weeks don’t define anything’

“It’s made a wrong start and lacks the right infrastructure!”  Delhi-based designer Ravi Bajaj does not mince words about the men’s fashion week opening in Delhi today.

“Firstly, I don’t do fashion weeks. They don’t define anything. I did open the last men’s week but only because it had kicked off. But I didn’t take a stall there.

Commercially, there are  lessons to be learnt.

Ask Rohit Bal, how many shirts he sells in a year? The answer will be shocking!” He feels the parameters are different for women and men’s fashion.  “Men’s wear requires a lot of muscle and infrastructure. For instance, one shirt  needs eight top-notch machines, and the cost for running these runs into Rs 15-20 lakh.

You don’t need that for a sari,” explains the designer, also adding Indian men’s fashion has to go beyond the traditional to be on par with fashion abroad.

‘I do not want to rush it...’

Fashion designer Manish Malhotra created ripples when he pulled out from the Delhi men’s fashion week that begins today (August 27—August 29).

“I’m going to Prague to  style a song for director Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar (starring Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif).  I’m doing the look for Nargis,” is the reason that the designer gives for backing out of the fashion week. “It was a prior commitment. Besides, I’m also representing India in South Africa for an Indian fashion festival on September 30. With all this happening, I had no time to put together a collection for the event. And I do not want to rush it as it was my first solo for men’s fashion,” said Manish.

The designer, who’ll be making his directorial debut, is also excited about the fashion theatre theme he’s worked on for the launch of his line at a store in Delhi.
