The melodious morning on Sunday was a rare treat for music lovers in the city. Celebrating the richness of Indian classical music, three well-known vocalists of different gharanas presented the same raga in their respective styles.
Citizens experienced a beautiful blend of the three gharanas with Kalapini Komkali, vocalist of the Gwalior gharana and daughter of legendary Kumar Gandharva, Nandini Bedekar of the Jaipur-Atroili gharana and Kaushiki Chakrabarty of the Patiala gharana at the morning session of ‘Sahela Re’. The two-day programme was to honour celebrated vocalist Kishori Amonkar for her 60 years of dedication to music.
The morning raga Todi was presented concurrently and consecutively by the three vocalists who were ably supported by Bharat Kamat on the tabla and Suyog Kundalkar on the harmonium.
Kalapini Komkali began with ‘Ja Re Mora…’, which was followed by Kaushiki’s lively rendition. Nandini Bedekar, who had come despite ill health presented ‘Tumi Sang Lage..’ Kalapini and Kaushiki took forward the rendition in between to support Bedekar — this only added to the beauty of the whole experience.
Kalapini then regaled all with ‘Pucho Ka Mose..’ while Kaushiki once again impressed the audience with ‘Mori Naiyya Par Karo Re...’ Her wonderful coordination with Bharat Kamat enhanced the performance.
Kaushiki is blessed with a melodious voice and musical potential that was given shape by her guru, parents and her unflinching dedication to music through the years.
Music is in her genes as she is the daughter of accomplished singer Chandana and Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty. Her parents were her first gurus, while Jnan Prakash Ghosh further groomed her.
