His passion for Hindustani music and his mastery over guitar is what led Pt Debashish Bhattacharya to form his own version of the instrument that was better suited for Hindustani classical.

Hence, Debashish came up with his trinity of guitars which he named as Chaturangui, Gandharvi and Anandi. These guitars were not only accepted worldwide,  but they also earned him a Planet Award and a Grammy nomination — something that he calls was “a new encouragement”.

Despite his many touring concerts, Debashish doesn’t miss out on Bollywood music and is keen on doing some film music too. “I love Bollywood music… and I’m definitely looking forward to sharing my music with Bollywood. I like listening to Lataji, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shreya Ghoshal, Kishoreda, Rafiji, Shankar Mahadevan amomg others,” he says.

“Indian music is so rich and diverse unlike American or European music,” he adds, revealing that he enjoys the music of BB King, Carlos Santana Paul Mccartney, Toumani Dibate, John Mclaughlin and others.

Pt Debasish who started playing guitar at the age of six, and at nine, was a disciple of legendary musician Pt Brij Bhushan Kabra, also known as the Father of Indian Guitar.

Talking about the guitars, he reveals that Chaturangui blends tones of Rudra-veena, Violin, Sarod and Sitar and is the first of the Trinity of Guitars. While Gandharvi represents the restless earth and the empowering sky, and blends tunes of Saraswathi-veena, Santoor, Sarangi and the acoustics of 12- string-guitar; Anandi, on the other hand, captures the exotic folk tunes that arises from the meditative mood and culminates the joy of creation. He has made use of all three in his albums Calcutta Chronicles and Calcutta Slide Guitar3 — both of which went on to becoming the bestsellers.

In his concert ‘Sliding to Glory’ taking place in the city today, Pt Debashish will present ragas — Malhar, Des, Tilak Amod, and Shivranjani using his trinity of slide guitars.
