But while red roses have been the most traditional way of expressing love, this tradition of love has changed of late. Red roses at city florists are increasingly being replaced with expensive exotic flowers like orchids, lilliums and many more.
“There is a huge rise in the demand for flowers during Valentine’s Day. The sale goes up by at least 20 to 30%. People are willing to pay more than Rs3,000 for flowers in a single bouquet and the most popular flowers this season are orchids and lilies, available in almost all colours,” said Raman Arora, the owner of Global Flowers.
“Roses were once the traditional flowers for Valentine’s Day but not anymore. People have started going in for lilies, tulips and orchids more than roses. The main reason is the striking colour of these flowers. It can really leave your partner spell-bound. Also it reflects the essence of affection and so they have gained a prominent position among flowers for expressing love,” said Kruti Mehta, a media professional.
“We have a lot of varieties in exotic flowers including lilliums, orchids, birds of paradise, mochara and chrysanthemums,” said Zaheer Therbhoy, partner at the Shamun’s Flowers, MG Road.
Same is the case with city-based Nishigandha Flowers. “We have orchids, lilliums, anthoriums and mochara.
Their prices start from Rs800 per bunch but red roses are also in huge demand this Valentine’s Day,” said Sachin Gund, CEO of Nishigandha Flowers. Although the rates of roses go up twice to thrice from the normal rate every Valentine’s Day, people still wish to buy them. Even though there are so many exotic flowers, roses have their own demand and charges don’t matter much.
