While US President Barack Obama may look debonair in his crisp suits, wife Michelle Obama too has been the toast of fashiondom for her dress sense. And with the Obama’s visit to India around the corner on November 6, fashion and politics are undoubtedly going to make for a heady mix. After Hrs gets Indian designers to create that one Indian outfit that would best suit the power couple on their visit here…

FOR HIM
‘A sherwani would add power’:
Krishna Mehta

“A black fitted sherwani will look nice on President Obama because his body structure allows him to wear such a linear look. A white chudidar and black leather shoes makes his look complete,” says Krishna Mehta.

‘Long jacket is classy’:  Neeta Lulla
Neeta suggests a black long jacket, high collar with a tinge of blue work on the collar, paired with narrow trouser. “This is a classic bandhgala look which exudes power and confidence.”

FOR HER
‘A knee-high slit’:  Azeem Khan
The designer says, “A high lapel collared fitted long dress in nude and made in silk crepe and embroidered with swarovski crystals, caviar beads and French gold metal sequins in a tiger print style is what I would design for the First Lady. A low neckline and a knee high slit in the front would give the desired oomph. While the high lapel collar gives a formal appearance, a long dress also makes her look extremely graceful. And the tiger print embellishment exudes the prowess of someone who is in a stature of power.”

‘Flowy, floor length kurta’: Maheka Mirpuri
“I would definitely like to see her in an Indian ensemble. It would be nice to give a slight western twist to an otherwise traditional Indian outfit so I’d dress her in an elegant flowy, floor length kurta in a cream going into a beige voluminous panelled kurta in layers and layers of chiffon. For the detailing, I have used a banarsi red brocade thick border with our traditional kairi motif with gold zari work on the hemline.

The dupatta is in red net with floral zardozi motifs. The short pleated sleeve and the low back just add to the drama of the ensemble. In keeping with her stature and personality, I feel this garment is apt as it is elegant yet strong. Also the silhouette is a blend of east and west. While the use of red symbolises power it is also an auspicious colour in our Indian tradition.”
