Get distressed with your denims this season! No, we don’t mean getting worried about the right fit and colour, but slipping into those ripped or destroyed jeans that are making a comeback on the fashion scene this season.

Even Hollywood hunks Zac Efron and Robert Pattinson have been spotted recently, flaunting these worn-in, ripped-up jeans, which are available in super skinny, classically straight, boot cut, dark wash and acid wash styles now.

International designer labels like Dolce&Gabbana (D&G), Calvin Klein (CK) and Zara have all given the distressed denims a new twist with unique versions and colours, with D&G incorporating bright lining underneath the tattered jeans, helping to cover up the skin show. Model Roshan Issac, who loves his destroyed pair, likes to keep the skin show minimal too.

“Distressed denims were always in demand. I owe quite a few pairs, but not the skin show variety. I recently bought a slim-fit one from Guess, with lining underneath, which seem to be the latest fad now,” he offers, adding that pairing these jeans with boots, tees and a jacket makes for the perfect evening look.

Model Zoheb Yusuf, who’s also a fan of these denims for their cool and casual vibe, says that denims work well both for night and day wear. “A distressed jeans in a lighter shade with a nice T-shirt works perfectly for a casual day out, while at night, one can slip into a darker shade paired with a smart shirt.”

With the resurgence of grunge fashion and distressed denims becoming a hot favourite, one still has to keep it toned down for that effortless style statement. Designer Lokesh Ahuja believes the trend works best when it is not overbearing. “Distressed denims should not be overtly torn  or tattered. A basic wash with the right distressing does the trick of looking good. However, if one wants to highlight the denim in an ensemble, then vintage jeans with stains look apt for a party outfit,” he offers.

Another point to keep in mind is that the jeans should be destroyed in the right places, like knees for instance. Skin peeping out of the wrong corners can make for a fashion debacle as hugged ripped chunks on denim can look disastrous. As model Sujith Sebastian offers, “I am not comfortable wearing clothes that look like they are in shambles. I like a little distressing, at the right spots with fades, rather than damaged and ripped ones.”

  • Pull on a pair of cool boots or sneakers or even flip-flops with your distressed denims, to look rugged with style
