Though it might sound a little nerdy and unfamiliar, intellectual vacations seem to be the order of the day. Walking up to the mountains to soak in the serenity, sitting by the sea and ideating, going to monuments and researching, reading up on history or even writing are some of the things that several people do when on an intellectual vacation.

And if you ignorantly assume that such trips are something that only people above 40 could possibly enjoy, here’s some news for you. Well, intellectual vacations are fast catching up amongst the youth and in particular the young professionals. Jyotika Mani, a 26-year-old media professional, vouches for it. “My boyfriend and I love to take off to quick vacations and we simply love visiting places of historical importance. We bond a lot over historical architecture and old ruins. Just walking hand-in-hand, seeing a place of significance, trying to understand the culture and people of a particular place fascinates us,” she says. “Sex, while on a vacation, is not always a necessity. I think it is the best time to talk and know your partner better and it can even happen over a hot cuppa chai by the riverside,” adds Jyotika.

Advaita Kala, author of the book Almost Single, says that she enjoys taking off to places to ideate. “I do it a lot to write,” she says. “I travel alone to places. I enjoy taking long walks and think and write. There is this place near Mussorie where I love to go. The beautiful and clean environment with all the ethical practices in place…it is so refreshing and mentally stimulating,” she adds.

Yogi Shah, of travel group Away and Beyond says, “Quite a lot of people these days are opting for such trips. For instance, architectural holidays are in vogue. People prefer going to places like Florence to admire art and paintings.”

Also, France being the land of philosophers, it remains one of the hotspots. Rome too is a historically rich place, which can be very mind engaging, suggests Shah. And if you want to restrict yourself to domestic travel, Pondicherry and Hampi top the list.
