Dr L Subramaniam is in seventh heaven now. The musician was recently invited to perform with the Beijing Symphony Orchestra at Beijing’s new National Center for Performing Arts. The venue, recently opened, is considered one of the best in the world.

Invited to collaborate with the nation’s top orchestra, the Beijing Symphony Orchestra, they performed Dr Subramaniam’s composition Shanti Priya in front of a mesmerised audience. Interestingly, Subramaniam became the first Indian to perform there.

“The new National Center for Performing Arts in Beijing is easily one of the most beautiful performance venues in the world. I was deeply honoured to be asked to be the first Indian artist to perform there.

And the collaboration with maestro Tan Lihua and his orchestra has been an amazingly enriching experience,” Dr Subramaniam told After Hrs from China.

Dr Subramaniam’s singer wife Kavita Krishnamurthy is also in China with him and they have received a warm welcome there. Needless to say, the conversations about music didn’t face the language barriers. “I find that in general, wherever you interact with musicians and artists, they are open, warm friendly people.  The audiences in China are well informed, very musical and extremely appreciative. We’ve made a few treasured friends,” he adds.

Carrying the legacy of Indian classical music to the world, he was also invited to deliver a special guest lecture to the students of the Central Conservatory of Music. “Beijing is a very interesting city.  They have a nice mix of traditionalism and modernity.  They have all the amenities and infrastructure, but they still preserve their heritage and culture.  They have a rich musical heritage and some wonderful traditional instruments, like the Erhu which is a two string bowed instrument,” he says.
