Rain showers are most awaited after sultry sweaty summers but the notorious season well known for water contamination food contamination and widespread of digestive problems, diarrhea, fevers, jaundice, typhoid to name a few. “Bouts of fever, food poisoning and gastroenteritis are a common feature in every house especially during this climate. Personal hygiene and diet modification can definitely prevent these bouts,” says nutritionist Priya Karkera. Here are her do’s and don’ts to eating out in the season…

Must-haves during monsoons

Water must be boiled before drinking. A secret tip: Add tulsi leaves or cumin seeds alternately to boost your immune system and keep cold and coughs at bay.

Hot and energising soups can be a treat in the monsoons.
Ensure all foods eaten must be fuming hot as microorganisms like viruses do not survive in extreme hot temperatures.

Whole pulses are encouraged during this season as they are a good source of fiber and potassium and are less contaminated.
Fried wadas and bhajjias are mouthwatering during heavy downpours. But ensure they are homemade.

A secret tip:- Make the batter with riceflour and gram flour(4:1). This will make it a healthier snack. Roasted flaxseeds (alsi), tilseeds (sesame), methi seeds (fenugreek seeds) aid in digestion. These can be added to vegetables or dals or to the chapatti dough, or to idli and dosa batters.

Must-avoids: Must-avoids during monsoons Frozen vegetables and cut raw salads or vegetables must be strictly avoided as the
water may be contaminated and can cause diarrhea.
Openly kept fruits and fruit juices can cause serious bacterial infections.

Green leafy vegetables and cauliflowers, cabbage, broccoli, mushrooms contain mud and worms which may not be washed away. These worms can enter the digestive system causing food poisoning.

Sweets kept open can flock flies on them leading to infections. Roadside fast foods like paanipuris, bhelpuris, wada pavs are extremely unhygienic and the main cause of any infections during monsoons.
