Unraveling Bangalore is perhaps one of the most complicated tasks. One cannot quite define what the city is, to begin with. Popularly known as the Garden City, Bangalore is also the IT hub, and has great places for shopping. The best of restaurants sit in the centre of attention, but the most delicious paani puri is always served on the footpath.

Housing a diverse multi-ethnic population, the city is a heady cocktail of history, culture, gardens and pure fun. If you ever put aside one day to discover the real Bangalore, these are the places you must see...

One of the oldest temples in Bangalore, the Bull Temple in Basavanagudi was built during the time of the founding father Kempegowda, himself. Built to appease the Nandi, hoping that it may prevent bulls from destroying their groundnut crop, farmers hold fairs even to this day to celebrate their bounty and sell their groundnuts.

Next on your itinerary must be Tipu Sultan’s summer retreat near the City Market. The beautiful wooden palace has five intricately sculpted arches in its fort. Though dulled over time, the palace is a piece of treasured history.

Spread over 240 acres in the city, the Lalbagh is an overwhelmingly green paradise. It exemplifies Bangalore as the Garden city. This botanical garden is also a centre of horticultural advancement.

Not to forget, the Cubbon Park is a 100 acre expanse of greenery, fringing the High Court, Vidhana Soudha and Raj Bhavan. The park is open at all times and a trace of history can be found, since the time of its establishment in 1870.

Not far away is the Vishweshwariah Industrial and Technological Museum. It was always Sir M Vishweshwariah’s dream to make technology meaningful for the common man and in this museum, one can find the most innovative applications of simple science that sparks one’s intellect.

Bangalore also has a not-to-miss zoological garden. The Bannerghatta National Park has a natural forest of over 25,000 acres, housing some rare and endangered species of animals. It also has a large number of carnivores. Its main attractions are the lion and tiger safari, and a colourful butterfly park.

These places are rooted in the very foundation of the city. They must be the first spots to be explored, and only then, one can have a holistic understanding of how the city stands.
