Pop icon Britney Spears and the Spice Girls made this silhouette popular in the ’90s. Since then, the crop top has evolved and is back as a regular feature in most fashionistas’ wardrobe. The belly-revealing top need not be flaunted only by the slim and trim. This season, there are longer, looser and more sober cuts for the tummy-conscious too.

Crop tops are a fad right now, says designer Abhishek Dutta. Though it is typically a summer trend, since Mumbai has no seasons it can be worn year round. “Most youngsters today are fitness conscious and can carry a crop top with ease. They can be worn with skirts or high-waisted trousers or even shorts. These tops make one look taller and hence you will find many celebs endorsing it,” says Abhishek whose last collection featured textured leather crop tops.

Designer Payal Khandwala believes clothes should allow room to breathe. “My crop tops are much longer and just reveal a hint of skin. The length allows the details on the waist of the bottom to be seen. Even if you have a great body, I think it’s nice to retain an element of mystery and not display your entire midriff. To me a short crop top is more of a teenage beach trend,” she says, adding that such garments can be restrictive in terms of comfort and fit.

Designer Yogesh Chaudhary believes what makes crop tops so popular is that they are a versatile garment. “Crop tops are a big part of retro fashion and as styles are cyclical, they keep coming back. Crop tops can be worn a 100 different ways. You can pair them with palazzo pants, a mini skirt, a sari, shorts or any other garment. They work really well as a stylish separate,” adds Yogesh.
