Anand Chulani was in a boarding school in London when he first encountered bullying. Today, the leadership and laughter coach can tell within minutes of interacting with a kid whether he’s being bullied or not.

Kids call him Mr Masti and their parents, the Pied Piper of India. Anand likes to call himself Mr Bean. He says, “In terms of bullying — I see my life in three chapters so far — being laughed at, making others laugh and empowering others to use laughter to become leaders, to be in their most effective state at all times. The third chapter would not have been possible without the first two!”

The young comic, who has now been made the educational director of Improv Comedy Mumbai, is more than happy to bring a unique method of teaching kids. The ‘LOL Method’ is an internationally proven course that teaches to lead through laughter. Anand divides in it into seven principles in his classes, with a focus on one theme every class.

The themes include trust, honesty, respect and appreciation, focus and flexibility, teamwork and inclusion, imagination, and compassion.

“Children can be made to remain in their state of enjoying life if you tap into their unlimited resources at the right time. Our goal is to create long lasting change,” explains Anand.

As a comedian, Anand has toured with popular comics Russell Peters, Martin Lawrence and written for shows like Life On A Stick, The Simpsons, and Goodness Gracious Me. Anand recalls, “I was called to write local jokes and refer to Bollywood songs for the episode in Simpsons, where Homer gets outsourced to India!” Anand’s had his brush with Bollywood too, having worked with actor Paresh Rawal in American Chai, to now collaborating with actor Anupam Kher for workshops. Anand is also in talks with a couple of TV channels for comedy shows.

A few days ago, Anand and his team did a rap with a bhajan about cricketer Harbhajan Singh. And before that, many years back, he re-wrote a Backstreet Boys song for actor Priyanka Chopra. He still remembers her breaking into laughter and later thanking him. And now, Anand jokes, "I've learnt so much about Rajnikanth that I'm sure I know more about him than his mother!"
